Where Do Humans Fit in an AI-Accelerated World?
As AI agents enter the workplace, teams around the world are asking the same honest question: where do I fit in? C-Shift explores the human need for belonging — and why organizations need to ask better questions about what it means to be human at work.

Rachel Taekla recently completed a world tour — from Europe to Africa to South America — working with teams beginning to integrate AI agents into their day-to-day work. The energy was real. People were curious, engaged, and excited about what these tools could do.

And inevitably, after results were delivered instantly, the same question surfaced: "Where do I fit in?"

It wasn't resistance. It came with a chuckle, more often than not. But it was honest. Because underneath efficiency sits something more fundamentally human — the need to belong. To know that when you show up to work, you have a place, a role, and a way to create value.

There's a second dynamic that doesn't get talked about enough. As AI accelerates the pace of work, many people are experiencing a kind of quiet cognitive fatigue. The volume of "good" options increases. Decisions are demanded faster. The pressure to choose the right path doesn't go away — it intensifies. What looks like efficiency on the surface can start to feel like overload underneath.

The organizations navigating this well aren't the ones with the fastest AI adoption. They're the ones asking the better questions — and having the harder conversations — about what it means to be human in an increasingly automated world. That starts with reframing what value means: moving from task execution to judgment, relationships, creativity, and meaning. And creating consistent space for honest dialogue about how humans are changing alongside AI.
